Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is recognised as one of the greatest global health challenges of our time. According to the World Health Organization, bacterial antimicrobial resistance was associated with nearly 5 million deaths worldwide in 2019, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated action across research, healthcare, and public policy.
While significant efforts are being made to develop new antibiotics, alternative therapies, and rapid diagnostic technologies, experts agree that scientific innovation alone will not be enough to address this growing threat. Greater awareness, multidisciplinary collaboration, and effective knowledge sharing are equally essential to ensure that research findings are translated into clinical practice and public health strategies.
A growing body of scientific literature also highlights the importance of a One Health approach, which recognises that human, animal, and environmental health are closely interconnected and that health challenges must therefore be addressed through a coordinated, cross-disciplinary perspective. Tackling AMR requires collaboration between researchers, healthcare professionals, industry, policymakers, and academic institutions to promote responsible antimicrobial use, strengthen surveillance, and accelerate the development of innovative solutions. In such a complex and rapidly evolving field, scientific communication plays a crucial role. Communicating research clearly and effectively helps bridge the gap between discovery and implementation, facilitates collaboration across disciplines, and supports informed decision-making among all stakeholders.
